PIMA Inaugural Function
07/03/2009
PIMA held its inaugural function on 26 June 2009. Approximately 150 distinguished guests attended the function at the renowned Platinum Suite at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton.
The guest speakers included Professor Mads Gilbert of Norway who gave an eye witness account of the events during the onslaught on Gaza in December 08 and January 09. He talked about the horrific scenes and the heroic action of the doctors at Al-Shifa Hospital, describing how they operated on more than one patient at a time.
The other Guest speaker was Dr Summerfield from London who talked about the medical ethics during conflicts and under occupation.
The third guest speaker is the renowned Lord Nazir Ahmed of Rotherham who talked about the importance of extending a helping hand to the Palestinians at this crucial time, and the importance of supporting humanitarian NGOs working in this field.
Dr Ahmed Almari, Chairman of the Board of Directors, talked about PIMA, its achievements and projects, and emphasised the urgent need for a cardiothoracic surgeon and a histopathologist to go to Gaza on a 6-12 months sabbatical leave.
Funds were raised to purchase permanent pacemakers and coronary stents to help treat cardiac patients in the Gaza Strip. The first ever permanent pacemaker was implanted in a patient in Gaza only two months ago when PIMA supplied the European Hospital in Gaza with a few pacemakers.
In the event, PIMA presented Professor Mads Gilbert, Dr Summerfield and Lord Ahmed with certificates of appreciation in recognition of their valuable role and support to the civilians in Gaza. PIMA also presented some of the 30 doctors and nurses who went to Gaza as part of PIMA convoys during the medical crises with certificates of appreciation.
